Toronto Marlies Top Syracuse Crunch In Wednesday Night Matchup

October 26, 2022

The Toronto Marlies topped the Syracuse Crunch 5-3 on Wednesday night. The Marlies improve to 3-2-0-0 while the Crunch fall to 1-2-0-2 on the season.

In the first period, it was a back-and-forth start, with both teams exchanging chances. But, both goalies stood tall in their crease and the score remained 0-0 after 20.

In the second period, it was the visitors who scored first. Simon Ryfors capitalized on the power-play in the final minute of the period to give the Crunch a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

In the third period, goals came fast and furious. Adam Gaudette scored on the power-play just 1:08 into the frame. Danny DeKeyser potted his first career AHL goal just over a minute later to give the Marlies a 2-1 lead. But, Syracuse responded just 29 seconds later as Gemel Smith scored his third of the year. Semyon Der-Arguchintsev scored another power-play goal for the home side at 7:54 of the third to give the Marlies the lead once again.

Joey Anderson picked up where he left off last season, scoring a short-handed goal at the 9:57 mark. He would add another empty net goal later in the frame to secure the win for the Marlies.

Keith Petruzzelli was strong in the Marlies crease, stopping 20 of the 23 shots he faced, and picking up his third win of the year.

The Marlies kickoff their 8-game Royal Road Trip on Friday night as they head to Syracuse for another battle with the Crunch. Puck drop is at 7:00pm.

POSTGAME QUOTES

HEAD COACH GREG MOORE

On the line of Steeves, Holmberg and Gaudette:

They played really well tonight. I found that the majority of the time that they were on the ice they found their way out the D zone pretty quickly, drove the puck down the rink, were able to set up the O zone. They’ve done a really good job of getting on the inside off the wall and finding opportunities in the slot.

ADAM GAUDETTE (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On his line:

It’s been good. I really like playing with (Steeves) and (Holmberg). They do a great job getting the puck in the corners and making smart plays and sticking to the game plan. Those two guys had a really good night tonight. I felt really comfortable with them out there. I thought our D played great tonight too. Overall, top to bottom, everyone played really well and did the right things.

On his early third period goal:

I think it was huge, not only the third period, but the whole game I thought we had a really, really good effort today. Everyone from the goalie to everyone on the ice. That was a good spark for us, and a good reward for playing well the whole game.
