Weekly Wrap-Up: February 5, 2018

The Toronto Marlies earned a pair of important wins this weekend, extending their point streak to a franchise record-tying thirteen games that stretches back to New Year’s Eve.

Starting the weekend off on the road in front of a packed house in Rochester, the Marlies and Americans battled through a tight-checking first period before Rich Clune broke the scoreless tie midway through the second. Rochester answered back with a pair of goals before Andreas Johnsson evened things up and sent the game to the third tied at 2-2.

With less than five minutes left in the third, Miro Aaltonen pounced on a loose puck to give the Marlies a lead before Vincent LoVerde connected on a hard one-timer to make it a 4-2 final.

Back in action on Saturday against the visiting Laval Rocket, the Marlies scored early and often in a big win over the top affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. Dmytro Timashov, Nikita Soshnikov, Colin Greening and Ben Smith all combined for goals in the opening period as the Marlies led 4-0 at the break.

Trevor Moore extended the lead in the second before Johnsson and Rinat Valiev added a pair of goals in the third on the way to a 7-1 victory over their North Division rivals.

Garret Sparks made 26 saves in Friday’s victory while Calvin Pickard turned aside 31 shots in Saturday’s win. They sit first and second in the league in goals against average with 1.62 and 1.89, respectively.

Johnsson finished the week with five points (2G, 3A) and earned CCM/AHL Player of the Week honours for his efforts. He is now second in goals scored across the league with 22 on the season.

Aaltonen recorded four points over the weekend, scoring one and earning three helpers.

Moore is now averaging a point-per-game in his last seven outings, scoring twice and adding five assists in that span.

Valiev is riding a three-game point streak, with one goal and two assists in that time.

The Marlies will return to action on Friday night in Belleville before coming home for back-to-back games against Binghamton on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday is our annual Star Wars Game and the first 5,000 fans will receive a Duke Icewalker bobblehead.
