The American Hockey League announced today that Toronto Marlies goaltender Garret Sparks has been selected as the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month for January.
Sparks has registered a 5-0-0-1 record through January, with two shutouts and has allowed just six goals in six starts. During this time, he has recorded a .98 goals-against average and .966 save percentage. Sparks ended January having shut out opponents over his last 154:01 of play.
Sparks, 24, leads the AHL in GAA (1.60), Save Percentage (0.944) and shutouts (4, tied), appearing in 25 games for the Marlies this season. His record of 17-6-1 puts him one off the lead in wins. Sparks has played 103 games for the Toronto Marlies since 2012, with a record of 66-25-6, with a 2.13 GAA and .928 save percentage. He made his NHL debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 30, 2015, recording a shutout against the Edmonton Oilers. Sparks was drafted 190th overall in the seventh round by the Maple Leafs in 2011.
The Toronto Marlies are the primary development program for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The current Toronto Maple Leafs roster features 14 players who were developed by the Marlies (Tyler Bozak, Connor Brown, Connor Carrick, Travis Dermott, Jake Gardiner, Justin Holl, Zach Hyman, Nazem Kadri, Kasperi Kapanen, Leo Komarov, Josh Leivo, William Nylander, Morgan Rielly and Nikita Soshnikov).
The Toronto Marlies head to Rochester to face off against the Americans on Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET and will be back at Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday to play the Laval Rocket at 4:00 p.m. ET.
