Dermott and Kapanen Named to the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic
The American Hockey League announced today the roster for the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Turning Stone Resort Casino, taking place January 28-29 in Utica, NY. Representing Toronto and the North Division All-Stars are Marlies defenceman Travis Dermott and forward Kasperi Kapanen.
Dermott, 21, has played in 26 games with the Marlies this season, registering 17 points (2 goals, 15 assists). The Newmarket, Ontario native has 13 points (2 goals, 11 assists) in his last 10 games. In his second AHL season, Dermott has played in 85 games, recording 41 points (7 goals, 34 assists).
Kasperi Kapanen, 21, has played in 20 games with the Marlies this season, recording 15 points (9 goals, 6 assists). Kapanen has also played six games with the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, scoring two goals. He was selected to the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic but missed the event due to an injury. In his fourth AHL season, Kapanen has played in 111 games, recording 85 points (37 goals, 48 assists).
Sheldon Keefe was named head coach of the North Division following the Marlies 5-1 win over the Belleville Senators on Dec. 31, 2017. Keefe led the North Division All-Stars in 2016 and in his third year as head coach of the Toronto Marlies holds a 119-65-2 record.
Scott Pellerin, Director of Player Development with the Toronto Maple Leafs, was also selected as Honorary Captain for the 2018 AHL All-Star in early December.
The Toronto Marlies are the primary development program for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The final roster of the 2016-17 Maple Leafs contained 12 Marlies graduates (Tyler Bozak, Connor Brown, Connor Carrick, Jake Gardiner, Zach Hyman, Nazem Kadri, Kasperi Kapanen, Leo Komarov, Josh Leivo, William Nylander, Morgan Rielly and Nikita Soshnikov). The Maple Leafs 2017 opening night roster featured 10 players who were developed with the Marlies (Bozak, Brown, Carrick, Gardiner, Hyman, Kadri, Komarov, Leivo, Nylander and Rielly).
